Don't know if anyone can help at all.

I noticed today that my tax disc (motability car) has run out (on Friday last). I rang Motability who said a new disc was sent out on the 14th December and the car is taxed. It will take them 5 days or so to get a duplicate out to me. In the meantime, I can't use the car so am housebound until the damned thing arrives. Has anyone got any good advice on whether I can obtain a duplicate from the local DVLA without a Log Book? Obviously, I have my Motability contract and Insurance etc. Would they be able to look it up on the computer and see that it had been taxed? What a ruddy mess. I'm really cross with myself for not spotting this before.

Love Jeanxxxx

Jean my dan out on the 31st dec and i only bought it that day on the net and it only came today but when you book on line they give you a reference cause you can still use the car but if you get pulled up i could give it to police to prove it so u can drive it as long as you know for definate it has been taxed. so try asking them for the reference number.Hope this helps

Hi Jean,

I've just spoken to my hubby who's in the motor trade and he said although you might be taxed and the disc is on it's way, you could still get done for not displaying a valid disc.
He also said to keep the car on the drive or if you have one in the garage.

Love,

Barbara

Hi Jean,

Sorry to confirm but you and Barbara are absolutely right. My Julian is a transport manager and agrees, even though it is actually taxed.

Hi Jean,

Sorry you is stuck - carless! There is nothing you can do until you receive your Tax Disc. As you are only the registered keeper and not owner of the vehicle, you can't buy a replacement disk. However, in the past, when I have been waiting for my new disk to arrive (both under the new scheme whereby Motability send the disk and the old system when I took my form to a PO for a free disk), I drove with a sign in the car saying Tax applied for. It may be risky but could get you out of the house.

hi Jean

I've done what Bob's done in the past, but have probably just been lucky as far as not getting caught goes.

Is it worth calling your local police station and asking them?

Directgov has info on car taxing.........

http://www.direct.gov.uk...xYourVehicle/DG_4022040

Do you think the original was lost in the Christmas post, or even stolen and maybe cashed in?

You can check the expiry date of your tax disc by making an online ‘vehicle enquiry’, to find out whether a tax disc has been issued. Just enter the registration mark and make of your vehicle.

Hi Jean

Not surprising that it hasnt arrived with postal strikes, christmas and being snow bound.

Can you call either a police station or the DVLA people and explain your are housebound without the car and you do need to get food which is a basic necessity. I think its extraordinary times and with the law arent there allowances for its interpretation and execution. I think what bob did was well thought out. However I would be reluctant to flag anyting to anyones attention. I do know that a van comes around the street with a machine reader to read the license plates.

However i have to admit that my car has been out of tax and on the road in the past without any consequences. Although that was a while ago. And I would probably feel the same as you worried about getting fines etc. I think you would have a good defense case.

It might turn up in the post today.

Take care

Mari

Thanks everyone for your very helpful replies.

I rang my motability dealer yesterday and asked if they would lease me a car until my certificate arrives. Sadly, they don't have a car hire scheme, but the guy phoned Motability, read the riot act and tells me that they put a duplicate disc in the post yesterday. I now wait with baited breath for its arrival!!

How annoying, Jean. It's a real inconvenience not to be able to use the car, especailly in this weather.

I hope you get the new disc soon.

Love Lyn
